Bel Air, Maryland Facts

Located in Harford county, Bel Air, Maryland, is 16 miles NE of Towson, Maryland (center to center) and 21 miles NE of Baltimore, Maryland. About 10,080 people live in Bel Air.

In 1731, Daniel Scott was given a huge area of land which he named Scott's Old Fields. Since then, the area has been owned by the Scott family. In 1780, Aquilla Scott, Daniel's son, inherited a portion of land in the area and planned the present-day territory of Bel Air. By 1784, the territory witnessed a robust growth and was renamed Belle Aire. Around 1798, it was once again renamed Bel Air. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1874. Bel Air was selected to a seat on the county in 1782.
